December 7, 2009 -- At Las Vegas's recently opened City Center, visitors to Las Vegas are thrilled by the opening of the elegant Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas hotel, which debuted Saturday (December 5). This recent addition to Hong Kong's illustrious hotel group is a welcome new addition to Sin City's myriad attention-getting properties.

Get a load of this one:

First stop: The 23rd-floor lobby, mixing a thoroughly modern look with Asian touches, courtesy fantastic designer Adam D. Tihany.

An elevated pool complete with flowing waterfall, spa-style bathrooms where Zen can be practiced by even the most frenzied Las Vegas visitor, and a fitness center to beat all Las Vegas fitness centers with whatever's-next-in-style equipment and services are big draws at the new Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas.

So is the Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas art collection, with works by such renowned creators as Frank Stella, Henry Moore, and Nancy Rubins. As you enter the new hotel, keep a lookout for the in-your-face Claes Oldenburg/Goosje van Bruggen outdoor sculpture, a four-ton, 19-foot piece of work done in stainless steel and fiberglass and emulating a big, bright, old-school typewriter eraser (sure to assist and inspire this weary journalist!)

Another super big plus: The focus is on green at this newly opened hotel, where the facade is designed to reduce solar heat. Lighting and thermostats inside are environmentally friendly as well in a property that promises to save some 3.5 million gallons of water every year.
